Gaza conflict: Israel calls up 16,000 reserve soldiers

‘Israel is calling up 16,000 extra reservists to bolster its military as the conflict in Gaza continues.
The move brings the total number of reserves called up by Israel to 86,000. Officials say it will give the army scope to maintain operations.
Separately, Israel has pledged to investigate a strike on a UN-run school that killed at least 16 people.
The UN says it is sheltering 225,178 Palestinians in 86 shelters across Gaza, with 200,000 more displaced.’

Razing Gaza: Before and after satellite images show the true devastation of Israel’s bombardment as 700 homes and mosques are turned to rubble and 400 craters blight the war zone

‘The obliteration of Gaza from relentless Israeli air strikes and tank shelling was laid bare today in a series of satellite images charting the escalating violence across the region.
Analysis from UN satellite experts reveal how hundreds of buildings have been razed to the ground in a series of attacks that have killed more than 1,300 Palestinians over the last three weeks.
Using images from July 6 – before the conflict began – and comparing them with ones from July 25, they have identified 700 destroyed structures, many of them homes and mosques.’

Time to evict Tony Blair from the Middle East – and the world stage as a whole

‘Seven years ago Tony Blair was appointed as a special envoy to the Middle East.
It came just hours after he resigned as Prime Minister. While it has no salary it pays him huge dividends in the form of political access and the appearance of still having some clout.
His office – funded at around £2million a year by the EU, UN, US and Russia – is tasked with promoting the economic development of Palestine.’

Egypt not cooperating on aid delivery to Gaza: Iran MP

‘The Egyptian government refuses to cooperate for the dispatch of medical and humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip, a senior Iranian lawmaker says.
On Wednesday, spokesman for the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Seyyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini criticized Egypt’s policies regarding the Israeli regime’s onslaught on Gaza, saying Cairo has not issued the permit needed for the delivery of relief aid to the blockaded Palestinian territory.
“Cairo is not providing the necessary cooperation for sending medicines and humanitarian aid to Gaza,” he added.’

Tory MPs’ visit to Israel condemned as bad timing

‘A group of Conservative MPs this week embarked on a visit to a military facility in Israel amid the continuing violence that has claimed the lives of about 1,270 Palestinians and 56 Israelis.
The MPs are touring the country as David Cameron called for an “unconditional, immediate, humanitarian ceasefire” and Philip Hammond, the defence secretary, warned Israel that its actions risk undermining western support.
On Tuesday, the parliamentarians went to a briefing at the Iron Dome missile defence system that shoots down Hamas rockets after one of the heaviest nights of shelling of Gaza.’

The Palestinians’ Right to Self-Defense

If Israel insists, as the Bosnian Serbs did in Sarajevo, on using the weapons of industrial warfare against a helpless civilian population then that population has an inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. The international community will have to either act to immediately halt Israeli attacks and lift the blockade of Gaza or acknowledge the right of the Palestinians to use weapons to defend themselves.
No nation, including any in the Muslim world, appears willing to intervene to protect the Palestinians. No world body, including the United Nations, appears willing or able to pressure Israel through sanctions to conform to the norms of international law. And the longer we in the world community fail to act, the worse the spiral of violence will become.

Israel does not have the right to drop 1,000-pound iron fragmentation bombs on Gaza. It does not have the right to pound Gaza with heavy artillery and with shells lobbed from gunboats. It does not have the right to send in mechanized ground units or to target hospitals, schools and mosques, along with Gaza’s water and electrical systems. It does not have the right to displace over 100,000 people from their homes. The entire occupation, under which Israel has nearly complete control of the sea, the air and the borders of Gaza, is illegal.

Violence, even when employed in self-defense, is a curse. It empowers the ruthless and punishes the innocent. It leaves in its aftermath horrific emotional and physical scars. But, as I learned in Sarajevo during the 1990s Bosnian War, when forces bent on your annihilation attack you relentlessly, and when no one comes to your aid, you must aid yourself. When Sarajevo was being hit with 2,000 shells a day and under heavy sniper fire in the summer of 1995 no one among the suffering Bosnians spoke to me about wanting to mount nonviolent resistance. No one among them saw the U.N.-imposed arms embargo against the Bosnian government as rational, given the rain of sniper fire and the 90-millimeter tank rounds and 155-millimeter howitzer shells that were exploding day and night in the city. The Bosnians were reduced, like the Palestinians in Gaza, to smuggling in light weapons through clandestine tunnels.

Their enemies, the Serbs—like the Israelis in the current conflict—were constantly trying to blow up tunnels. The Bosnian forces in Sarajevo, with their meager weapons, desperately attempted to hold the trench lines that circled the city. And it is much the same in Gaza. It was only repeated NATO airstrikes in the fall of 1995 that prevented the Bosnian-held areas from being overrun by advancing Serbian forces. The Palestinians cannot count on a similar intervention.
The number of dead in Gaza resulting from the Israeli assault has topped 650, and about 80 percent have been civilians. The number of wounded Palestinians is over 4,000 and a substantial fraction of these victims are children. At what point do the numbers of dead and wounded justify self-defense? 5,000? 10,000? 20,000? At what point do Palestinians have the elemental right to protect their families and their homes?

Article 51 does not answer these specific questions, but the International Court of Justice does in the case of Nicaragua v. United States. The court ruled in that case that a state must endure an armed attack before it can resort to self-defense. The definition of an armed attack, in addition to being “action by regular armed forces across an international border,” includes sending or sponsoring armed bands, mercenaries or irregulars that commit acts of force against another state. The court held that any state under attack must first request outside assistance before undertaking armed self-defense. According to U.N. Charter Article 51, a state’s right to self-defense ends when the Security Council meets the terms of the article by “tak[ing] the measures necessary to maintain international peace and security.”

The failure of the international community to respond has left the Palestinians with no choice. The United States, since Israel’s establishment in 1948, has vetoed in the U.N. Security Council more than 40 resolutions that sought to curb Israel’s lust for occupation and violence against the Palestinians. And it has ignored the few successful resolutions aimed at safeguarding Palestinian rights, such as Security Council Resolution 465, passed in 1980.

Resolution 465 stated that the “Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War of 12 August 1949 is applicable to the Arab territories occupied by Israel since 1967, including Jerusalem.” The resolution went on to warn Israel that “all measures taken by Israel to change the physical character, demographic composition, institutional structure or status of the Palestinian and other Arab territories occupied since 1967, including Jerusalem, or any part thereof, have no legal validity and that Israel’s policy and practices of settling parts of its population and new immigrants in those territories constitute a flagrant violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War and also constitute a serious obstruction to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East.”

International activists risk lives to protect Gaza’s ambulances under fire

‘A team of international activists in Gaza acted as “human shields” this afternoon to secure medications for injured and disabled Palestinians by accompanying Red Crescent ambulances into a firing zone in Gaza City. The activists are all foreign nationals, hailing from the United Kingdom, United States and Sweden.
To reach el-Wafa Rehabilitation Hospital the internationals crossed heavy Israeli military shelling from the air and border area. The medical facility was destroyed beyond use by Israeli missiles Thursday evening. The Israeli military had said weapons were being launched from nearby the hospital and said Hamas had used the facility as a “human shield.”
When the human rights defenders reached el-Wafa they found the remains of the facility was smoking from a strike earlier today. The internationals were unable to enter the burning building to retrieve medications.’

Expel Palestinians, populate Gaza with Jews, says Knesset deputy speaker

‘Israel must attack Gaza even more mercilessly, expel the population and resettle the territory with Jews, the deputy speaker of Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, has said.
Moshe Feiglin, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling Likud Party, makes the call in an article for the Israeli news website Arutz Sheva.
Feiglin demands that Israel launch attacks “throughout Gaza with the IDF’s [Israeli army’s] maximum force (and not a tiny fraction of it) with all the conventional means at its disposal.”‘

Fox’s Kurtz Amends Statement That ‘No Question’ Hamas Kidnapped Israeli Teens

‘Fox’s Media Buzz host Howard Kurtz definitively laid blame on Hamas Sunday morning for initiating the current hostilities with Israel, stating at the top of his show, “There is no question that Hamas started the latest round of mideast violence, first with the killing of three Israeli teenagers, and then by firing rockets indiscriminately at the Jewish state.”
BuzzFeed’s Dorsey Shaw noticed the line right away, and thought it fishy, as word emerged Friday that the kidnappings were likely the work of a lone cell — “Hamas-affiliated,” in the words of BBC’s Jon Donnison, “but not operating under leadership.”
Kurtz amended his statement later on Twitter: “My point on the three slain Israeli teenagers is that Hamas praised killings as a heroic act.”‘

The World According to the Mainstream Media: Russia and Palestine are ‘Guilty until Proven Innocent’

‘Recent events has enabled Western governments, Israel and the mainstream media (MSM) to launch a propaganda crusade against Russia and Palestine. They accused the Russian government and the Anti-Kiev militias in East Ukraine for its direct involvement in the downing of Malaysian Airlines MH-17 without any hard evidence to support their claim. US intelligence agencies did admit that Russia was not directly linked to the Malaysian Airlines incident, but they managed to blame Russia indirectly.
They claimed “that Russia was responsible for “creating the conditions” that led to the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, but they offered no evidence of direct Russian government involvement” according to ABC news. The accusations against Russia were baseless. What is important to the families of the Malaysian Airlines tragedy is for them to find out the truth about those responsible for the crimes. Blaming actors who are not responsible for the crime will not bring peace to the families.’

ISIS ‘beheads scores of Syrian soldiers’ after daring assault on army base

‘Jihadist group ISIS published photos of the beheadings of soldiers and officers at a Syrian government base near the eastern city of Raqqa after rebel forces reportedly breached a stronghold that had not been captured since the start of the conflict.
Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the outcome of the attack, which began when two Saudi suicide bombers simultaneously detonated their payload at different points of the Division 17 base perimeter on Thursday.
Hours of intense firefights followed. The jihadists – who already control much of the northeastern province – attacked from the ground, while government forces used helicopters to strike back while holding fortified positions.’

‘Only stones remain’: Gaza lies in ruins

‘Umm Ahmed Abu Sahwish holds stones in her hands. They are now all that’s left of her demolished home. “My home is gone and only stones remain,” the 65-year-old says.
Hundreds of homes here have been destroyed, and unexploded Israeli missiles litter the ground at the entrance to the town, at Gaza’s northern tip near the border with Israel. The local hospital, emergency rescue equipment, and infrastructure have also incurred heavy damage from Israeli shelling.
Another woman, from a family of 20 people, cries as she tries to dig through the rubble of her house.’
